Interpol-Led Crackdown Dismantles Major Human Trafficking Networks Worldwide
Operation Global Chain has seen over 1,000 arrests made in 59 countries against criminals associated with human trafficking. The joint operation conducted by Interpol with the collaboration of Europol and Frontex saw over 40,000 law enforcement personnel taking part in the five-day mission that was held in June. In the operation, authorities discovered over 2,070 victims or possible victims, who have fallen prey to sexual exploitation, forced labor, coercive begging, and forced criminal activities. Some major networks were brought down in the operation; a network that has been trafficking hundreds of South Americans to Cambodia for forced online scamming, and a network making use of social media to lure young girls into prostitution rings in Belgium and France. The new global routes that came into focus during the raid include trafficking of Latin American victims to Europe. As a result of the raid, 465 investigations have been launched, and according to Interpol Secretary Valdecy Urquiza, this shows that while human trafficking is an extremely lucrative global business, cooperation between nations can help a lot.
